LEARNING FROM TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE
How can traditional architecture be preserved and adapted today to meet contemporary environmental, social, and cultural challenges while remaining a living practice?
Mérida, Mexico
The Traditional Architecture Festival of Mérida, held in August 2025, created an international space for dialogue and reflection on traditional architecture, its transformations, and the lessons it offers for a more sustainable future. Centered on the theme “Learning from Traditional Architecture,” the festival brought together researchers, architects, craftspeople, students, and local communities through conferences, exhibitions, hands-on workshops, and film screenings.
Throughout the event, traditional architecture was treated not as a nostalgic reference, but as a living knowledge informing present and future practices, highlighting how vernacular techniques, local materials, and climate-adapted methods address today’s environmental, social, and cultural challenges.
Rooted in Mérida’s rich architectural tradition, the festival emphasized dialogue between ancestral knowledge and contemporary innovation, the role of craftspeople in preserving techniques, and the cultural, social, and environmental value of vernacular heritage. Through demonstrations, discussions, and creative exchanges, the 2025 edition reaffirmed that learning from traditional architecture means inhabiting the world more responsibly, collectively, and sustainably.
